That’s the approach taken by Artin Light, a Manchester-based studio led by Luke Artingstall. Luke’s journey started in interior design, but lighting quickly became his focus. He founded Artin Light in 2018 after years of experience in the industry. Today, the studio works on projects across the UK and internationally.
Artin Light’s process begins with narrative. Every concept is built around a story - whether it’s drawn from architecture, client values, or cultural references. The team uses sketches, mood boards, and immersive visuals to bring ideas to life. They also experiment with sculptural forms, atmospheric colour, and digital light to create spaces that feel layered and intentional.
Luke often draws inspiration from film. He sees lighting as a way to build mood and emotion, much like a cinematic set. This perspective shapes how the studio approaches both commercial and public spaces - not just as places to work or gather, but as environments that leave a lasting impression.
Recent projects include Bloc in Manchester, where lighting transforms the space from a daytime workplace into a night-time venue. Another standout is the Solus showroom, where lighting was used to create a “campfire” experience - a central storytelling zone that highlights the history and emotion behind each product.
Artin Light balances aesthetics with function. They design schemes that are practical for users but also push creative boundaries. Their work includes testing, mock-ups, and close collaboration with architects and other disciplines to ensure the final result matches the original vision.
Looking ahead, Luke sees lighting becoming more responsive and sustainable. Smart controls, circular design, and reduced waste are key priorities. He also believes lighting should support wellbeing, offering comfort and flexibility in spaces that adapt to different needs.
